Rocket parachute flare is a long-range pyrotechnic distress signal used in maritime emergencies. Designed for day or night use, it launches to an altitude of 300 m (1,000 ft). It releases a bright red flare that descends slowly on a parachute for about 40 seconds, providing up to 30,000 candela of visibility.
