An Umbilical Cord Clamp is a vital, single-use medical disposable used immediately after the birth of a baby. Its primary purpose is to compress the umbilical cord to stop bleeding from the three blood vessels (two arteries and one vein) after the cord is cut.
Clamping: After the baby is delivered, two clamps are usually placed on the cord. The primary clamp is positioned about 1.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 inches) away from the baby's abdomen. A second clamp or forceps is placed further up toward the placenta.
Hinged Flexing: The plastic hinge must be highly flexible but strong enough not to snap or crack when maximum pressure is applied during closure.
