Aneroid sphygmomanometer is a device used to measure blood pressure. The name "aneroid" means "without fluid," and unlike a mercury sphygmomanometer, this type does not use mercury. Instead, it uses a mechanical dial gauge to display pressure readings.
The sphygmomanometer works by inflating a cuff placed on a person's arm to temporarily stop blood flow. A healthcare professional then uses a stethoscope to listen for the sounds of blood flow returning as the pressure is slowly released.
This type of device is often used in both clinical settings and for at-home blood pressure monitoring because it is portable and does not require batteries.
