Selective enrichment broths or selective agars specific for the isolation of Hafnia are not available. The organism can grow on less selective agars utilized for enteric bacteria, such as Hektoen, xylose-lysine-deoxycholate, eosin-methylene blue, and MacConkey, but strains of Hafnia do not grow well on highly selective agars, such as Salmonella–Shigella, deoxycholate-citrate, or bismuth sulfite.
