Poke root (from Phytolacca americana) is a powerful herb traditionally used in folk medicine — but it is not edible and can be toxic if taken internally in any form. ⸻ Safety First • All parts of the pokeweed plant — root, berries, and leaves — contain toxic compounds (especially phytolaccatoxin and phytolaccigenin). • Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, weakness, and serious poisoning. • Therefore, poke root should not be eaten, drunk, or used in food or supplements.
