A distribution board (DB)—also called a panel board, breaker panel, or consumer unit—is the central point in an electrical system where incoming power is distributed to different circuits in a building.
What it does
It takes the main electrical supply and safely divides it into multiple smaller circuits (like lighting, sockets, appliances), each protected by its own device.
Main components
Main switch (isolator) – turns off power to the entire system
Circuit breakers (MCBs) – protect individual circuits from overloads/short circuits
RCD / RCCB / ELCB – protects against electric shock (leakage current)
Busbars – distribute power to the breakers
Wiring terminals – connect outgoing circuits
