What Is a Digital Sound Level Meter?
A digital sound level meter (also called a decibel meter or noise meter) is an instrument used to measure sound intensity (noise levels) in decibels (dB). It converts acoustic sound waves into electrical signals via a microphone and displays the resulting noise level digitally.
How It Works
A microphone detects sound pressure and produces an electrical signal.
That signal is processed, sometimes with frequency weighting (e.g., A-weighting to approximate human hearing) and time weighting (fast/slow).
The result is shown as a numeric decibel (dB) value on an LCD screen.
Some meters also record data, hold max/min readings, and connect to a PC.
Common Uses
Checking environmental noise (streets, factories)
Workplace noise assessments and health/safety compliance
Sound system calibration (rooms, con
