Algicide !
What is it?
An algicide is a chemical agent used to kill or control algae growth in water.
Common types:
1. *Copper-based*: Copper sulfate, chelated copper — effective but can stain and accumulate.
2. *Quaternary ammonium compounds ("quats")*: Work well but can cause foaming.
3. *Polyquats*: Less foaming than quats, good for maintenance.
4. *Sodium hypochlorite/bromine*: Oxidizers that kill algae as part of sanitation.
Uses:
1. *Pools & spas*: Prevent green, yellow, or black algae.
2. *Aquariums/ponds*: Control algae blooms (use fish-safe formulas).
3. *Industrial water*: Cooling towers, wastewater systems.
Handling & tips:
1. *Dosage*: Follow label instructions — overdosing can cause staining or foaming.
2. *Prevention*: Balance pH, chlorine, and filtration; algicide works best as a preventative, not just a cure.
