A TIG welding torch's function is to supply an electric current to a tungsten electrode that heats and melts the metal being welded. The torch also protects the metal from oxidation and chemical reactions with the air.
How it works
The torch's tungsten electrode is the source of the arc that heats the metal
A shielding gas, usually argon, flows from the torch's gas nozzle to protect the metal and weld pool
The welder feeds filler rod into the molten puddle
The welder moves the torch in a small circle to create a welding pool
Benefits
TIG welding produces high-quality weld seams
TIG welding can be used for aluminum and other metals
TIG welding allows for soft starting and soft stopping of the heat
