Etheforce is a widely used synthetic plant growth regulator with the chemical formula (HO)2P(O)CH2CH2Cl
It works by being absorbed into plant tissues and breaking down to release ethylene, a natural plant hormone that influences processes like fruit ripening, abscission (dropping of leaves/fruit), flowering induction, and growth regulation.
In agriculture, ethephon promotes uniform fruit ripening in crops such as tomatoes, bananas, apples, mangoes, and pineapples; accelerates harvest in walnuts and cherries; reduces lodging in cereals; controls turfgrass growth; and eliminates undesirable fruit on ornamental trees.
