Butachlor is a selective pre-emergence chloroacetanilide herbicide (HRAC Group K3 / WSSA Group 15) widely used in agriculture, particularly for rice (both transplanted and direct-seeded/wet-seeded) but also effective in some upland crops like maize, cotton, groundnut, and certain vegetables, where it is applied to soil shortly after planting or before weed emergence to control annual grasses and certain broadleaf weeds/sedges. It acts systemically by being absorbed primarily through germinating shoots (and secondarily by roots) of emerging weeds, inhibiting very long-chain fatty acid synthesis essential for cell membrane formation and lipid biosynthesis, which prevents weed seedling growth and leads to their death shortly after germination.
