How It Works
Reduced Voltage Start: When the motor starts, contactors connect it to the transformer's taps, applying a fraction of the rated voltage.
Current Reduction: Since the voltage is lowered, the motor draws less current. Because it acts as a transformer, the current drawn from the supply line is even lower.
Full Voltage Run: Once the motor reaches
of its rated speed, the starter bypasses the autotransformer entirely, applying full line voltage to the motor for normal operation.
An autotransformer starter is a reduced-voltage motor starter used for large induction motors to mitigate high starting currents. By stepping down the voltage during startup using transformer taps (typically 50%, 65%, or 80%), it minimizes voltage drops on the power supply network and protects mechanical equipment.
