A magnetic lock, or maglock, uses electromagnetism to secure doors without mechanical latches. It relies on a two-part system: an electromagnet mounted on the door frame and a steel armature plate attached to the door itself.
When electrical power flows through the lock, the electromagnet creates a strong magnetic field. This magnetic pull binds the armature plate and the magnet together, often generating a holding force between 600 to 1,200 pounds
