A dynamic drum mic system is a collection of specialized moving-coil microphones engineered to capture the high sound pressure levels (SPL) and wide frequency range of a drum kit. These systems are preferred for live performance and loud studio recording because they are rugged, handle extreme volume without distortion, and do not require external phantom power.
Core System Components
Standard systems include multiple microphones tailored to specific parts of the kit:
Kick Drum Mic: Features a large diaphragm and a frequency response optimized for deep low-end (20 Hz – 100 Hz) and the "thump" of the beater. Examples include the AKG D112 and Shure Beta 52A.
