PRINTERS AND SCANNERS IN NIGERIA

It’s not often feasible to run to your nearest cybercafé or stationery store to print crucial documents. In such circumstances, having a printer at home can be of immense benefit in terms of comfort and expense. You can get many things done with printers for home use, whether for printing documents or photos.

Printers and scanners are entirely different devices. A printer is an output device, while the scanner is an input device. The significant difference between them is that the printers process the soft copy and generate its hard copy, while the scanner does the exact opposite.

Definition of Printers and scanners

A printer is an output device that obtains the text and graphics output from the computer and transfers the information over the paper. There is a wide range of printers depending on their size, cost, speed, and complex construction. Due to technological advancement, 3D printers capable of producing 3D prints of an object have surfaced.

A scanner, also known initially as an image scanner, is a device that visually scans images, printed text, handwriting, or drawings and turns them into a digital image. Varieties of desktop flatbed scanners are typically used in offices where the document is placed on a glass window for scanning. They regenerate an image from a source object and generate an identical image for presentation or processing.

Types of Printers and scanners

Mainly, all the types of printers are in two types;

  • Impact printer, which produces images over paper with the help of an electromechanical impact device similar to the operation of a mechanical typewriter. Examples of this printer category include:

    • Dot-matrix printers.

    • Line printers.

    • Daisy wheel printers.

  • The non-impact printer does not use the hammering impact to print the characters over the paper. Examples of this printer category include;

    • Inkjet printers.

    • Laser printers.

The inkjet uses ink nozzles that eject microscopic ink drops.

There are different scanner types, and they include;

  • Flatbed scanners are the ones that include a glass bed on which the document is positioned so that the scanner head could quickly move over it. It is the most widely used scanner.

  • Sheet-fed scanners come with a movable scan head where the paper document is inserted into a roller.

  • Handheld scanners are those that require manual operation of the device on the document to scan it.

  • Drum scanners are used where highly detailed images are scanned. They use a photomultiplier tube for capturing the image.

Key Differences Between Printers and Scanners

  • A printer generates the document over a piece of paper while the scanner transforms data over a sheet of paper into a digital copy.

  • You can easily edit a document before printing, but the digital copy cannot be altered after scanners generate it.

  • Printers support all the extension types while all the scanner works with specific dimensions of pages, including length, width, and thickness of the paper except the handheld scanner.

  • The printer may work with generating impact over the paper, tiny ink nozzles, or photosensitive plates. In contrast, the scanner works with an illuminator lamp, lens, and charged coupled device array to convert the printed copy into a digital copy.
