A Christmas tree is a special evergreen tree—like a pine, fir, or spruce—that stays green all year round and is decorated during the Christmas season Where It Started: The modern Christmas tree tradition began in Germany about 400 to 500 years ago in the 16th century. Early Decorations: Long ago, people did not use electric lights. Instead, they decorated trees with apples, nuts, berries, paper, and real wax candles. (Candles were later replaced by electric lights for safety!) Royal Popularity: The tradition spread around the world after Queen Victoria of Britain and her German husband, Prince Albert, put up a decorated tree in their castle in the 1840s and shared a picture of it in a newspaper Tree Toppers: Most trees have a bright star or an angel right at the very top
