A sand filter is a water purification device that uses a tank filled with sand to physically trap and remove dirt, debris, and other suspended particles from water as it flows through. Water enters the tank, percolates down through the sand bed, and exits as clean water, with the contaminants left behind. Once the sand becomes clogged, the filter is cleaned through a process called backwashing, where water flow is reversed to flush the accumulated debris to a waste line.
