The Stanley Cup, also known as La Coupe Stanley in French, is the championship trophy awarded annually to the playoff winner of the National Hockey League (NHL). It's the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, first donated in 1892 by Lord Stanley of Preston, then-Governor General of Canada, for 10 guineas (about $50 at the time). Originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, it was intended for Canada's top amateur ice hockey club. The first winner was the Montreal Hockey Club in 1893.
