Guinea cloth, historically, refers to a category of Indian-made cotton textiles, often blue, white, or striped, that were a significant trade item in the Atlantic slave trade. These cloths, sometimes called "brawles," "capperees," "chelloes," "hussanees," or "pautkas," were re-exported by European slave traders to West Africa and the West Indies. Later, European manufacturers also produced guinea cloth in imitation of the Indian goods. The term is also used more broadly to describe various cotton textiles with loom-patterned or piece-dyed designs.
