*Uziza* is a West African spice plant with real cultural and health significance in Nigeria. *1. What it actually is* - *Scientific name*: _Piper guineense_ – also called African Black Pepper or Ashanti Pepper - *Family*: Same family as black pepper, but it’s a different species - *Parts used*: Both the *leaves* and *seeds* are used, but they’re not the same thing *2. The two parts and their uses* *Uziza leaves* – _Piper guineense leaves_ - *Look*: Dark green, broad, slightly shiny leaves with a strong peppery aroma - *Taste*: Spicy, peppery with a slight bitter undertone. Not as hot as chilli pepper - *Use in cooking*: Used fresh or dried in soups like *Uziza soup, Nsala soup [white soup], Pepper soup, and Egusi soup*. Especially popular in Igbo and Efik cooking
