*Holy basil* is a sacred herb in India and a powerhouse in Ayurvedic medicine. You’ll also see it called *Tulsi*.
1. *What it is*
- *Scientific name*: _Ocimum tenuiflorum_ or _Ocimum sanctum_
- *Family*: Same mint family as peppermint and basil
- *Origin*: India and Southeast Asia. Grown in Nigeria now, especially in Abuja, Jos, and herbal gardens
It’s a small shrub with green or purple leaves, a strong clove-like aroma, and tiny white or purple flowers. The smell is spicy, not sweet like sweet basil.
2. *Why “Holy”*
In Hindu tradition, Tulsi is considered sacred to the goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu.

- Used in daily prayers and rituals
- Believed to purify air and protect the home
