A wall stud detector, also known as a stud finder or stud sensor, is a handheld device used to locate wooden studs, metal framing members, and electrical wiring behind walls, ceilings, and floors. It helps users avoid damaging hidden structures when hanging objects, drilling, or performing other construction or renovation tasks. These devices use sensors that detect changes in the dielectric constant of the wall material. When the sensor passes over a stud (which has a different density than drywall), it indicates the presence of the stud, often with lights and/or sounds. Magnetic Stud Finders: These devices detect nails or screws used to attach the studs to the wall, indirectly revealing the stud's location. Multi-Sensor Stud Finders: These combine multiple technologies to detect various materials and provide more vital imformatios.
