Triethanolamine, or TEA, is an organic compound with the chemical formula N 3. It is a colourless viscous liquid. It is both a tertiary amine and a triol. The compound is used to make surfactants in industrial and cosmetics as a pH adjuster for skin and hair conditioning products as well as sun screen lotions, liquid laundry detergents, polishes, and paints. Triethanolamine (TEA) is a non-active ingredient that does not have any effect on the skin but is only used to balance the pH of formulations and stabilize them. This ingredient improves the feel of the product and the way that it interacts with the skin.
