A self-centering chuck works by using a central spiral scroll plate and bevel pinion gears to move all of its jaws—typically three or four—in unison. When you turn the chuck key, the internal scroll rotates and forces every jaw to slide inward or outward at the exact same rate. This synchronized movement automatically aligns round, hexagonal, or symmetrical workpieces directly on the center axis of the machine spindle.
