Poke root (from Phytolacca americana) is a powerful herb traditionally used in folk medicine — but it is not edible and can be toxic if taken internally in any form. ⸻ Safety First • All parts of the pokeweed plant — root, berries, and leaves — contain toxic compounds (especially phytolaccatoxin and phytolaccigenin). • Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, weakness, and serious poisoning. • Therefore, poke root should not be eaten, drunk, or used in food or supplements. Traditional (External) Uses Historically, herbalists used poke root externally — diluted or infused — for: • Drawing out boils or abscesses • Reducing swelling in lymph nodes • Topical salves for muscle or joint pain However, even for external use, it must be heavily diluted and handled with caution, as it can still irritate the skin.
