Glufosinate ammonium (also known as glufosinate-ammonium) is a non-selective, contact herbicide (HRAC/WSSA Group 10) widely used in agriculture as a broad-spectrum foliar-applied product to control emerged annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds, primarily through inhibition of the enzyme glutamine synthetase, which disrupts nitrogen metabolism, causes toxic ammonia buildup, damages cell membranes, and leads to rapid weed death with limited translocation in the plant. It is commonly applied as a burndown treatment before planting or crop emergence in various crops, such as maize (corn), soybeans, canola, cotton, and others, as well as in tree crops, vines, berries, and in some tropical systems like cocoa plantations for weed management to replace manual slashing.
