Abamectin is a broad-spectrum insecticide, miticide (acaricide), and nematicide derived from the fermentation of the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis. It belongs to the avermectin family and is widely used in agriculture.
What it does: It works by disrupting the nervous system of target pests — specifically by enhancing the activity of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which opens chloride ion channels, leading to hyperpolarization, paralysis, cessation of feeding, and eventual death of the pests. It primarily affects insects and mites through ingestion or contact (with some translaminar/systemic movement in plants), and it's highly effective against various arthropod pests.
Key pests controlled: Spider mites, other phytophagous mites, leafminers, thrips, aphids, whiteflies, pear psylla, and certain nematodes.
