Spinosad is a broad-spectrum, naturally derived insecticide (and sometimes miticide) belonging to the spinosyn class.
What it does: Spinosad acts primarily through contact and ingestion (stomach poison). It targets the insect's nervous system by exciting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, causing involuntary muscle contractions, hyperexcitation, paralysis, cessation.
Key pests controlled: Primarily effective against:
Lepidopteran larvae (caterpillars/moths/worms) — e.g., diamondback moth, cabbage looper, armyworms (fall/beet armyworm), corn earworm, codling moth, leafrollers
Thrips
Leafminers
Certain beetles (e.g., Colorado potato beetle larvae)
Spider mites (some formulations)
Fruit flies, flies, fire ants, and others
It's particularly strong against hard-to-control or resistance-prone pests like diamondback moth and armyworms.
