Permethrin cream is a topical medicine most commonly used to treat scabies. It is also used for other conditions, such as head lice.
For adults and children ≥2 months, the usual treatment is:
1. Apply a thin layer over the entire body from the neck down, including between the fingers and toes, under the nails, wrists, armpits, waist, buttocks and genital area.
2. Leave it on for 8–14 hours, usually overnight.
3. Wash it off thoroughly.
4. Repeat after 7 days if recommended, because the first application may not kill newly hatched mites.
Important: Everyone living in the same household and close contacts may need treatment at the same time, even if they don't have symptoms.
Itching can continue for 2–4 weeks after successful treatment because of the skin's reaction to the mites.
