The saw palmetto is a type of tree. Its mature fruit is utilized in the production of medication. Saw palmetto is most typically used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy, or an enlarged prostate (BPH). However, it does not appear to be improving the situation. Saw palmetto is also used to prevent complications following prostate surgery and to cure other prostate diseases, male-pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), sexual dysfunction, and other issues, although most of these claims are based on a lack of scientific evidence.
Saw palmetto does not appear to diminish the prostate's overall size, but it does appear to shrink the inner lining, which puts pressure on the urine channels. Saw palmetto may also inhibit testosterone from being converted to dihydrotestosterone, a more powerful version (DHT). Some types of hair loss are thought to be caused by increased susceptibility of hair follicles to DHT. Reduced DHT levels may aid in the prevention of several types of hair loss.
Possibly Effective for
Prostate surgery of this sort (transurethral resection of the prostate or TURP). According to research, consuming 320 mg of saw palmetto daily for two months before prostate surgery can minimize the amount of time spent in surgery, blood loss, complications during surgery, and overall hospital stay.
It may be ineffective for enlarging the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). Saw palmetto has little or no benefit for lowering BPH symptoms, according to the majority of high-quality, credible research. Saw palmetto does not appear to help with nighttime urination or uncomfortable urination.
Insufficient Evidence for
More research is needed to rate saw palmetto's efficacy for these treatments
