I first discovered the power and depth of Matthew Henry's insights and explanations from online Bible sources, that listed a dozen or so commentators. Henry's words always moved me more deeply. Having his full unabridged commentary in a single bound volume is a joy and reassurance.
This is more of a running sermon than a line-by-line explanation of Scripture. Matthew explores verses in batches, frequently pulling several paragraphs (or more) of thought and analysis from just a few verses: he writes of the heart and meaning of Scripture, and not so much the technical aspects. As we are called to worship in spirit and truth, gaining clarity (and being challenged) on the heart, helps the contemplative reader construct strong and upright understanding. Frequently, aspects of Scripture, and of His nature, are revealed that astound and inspire.
