Lagos is a densely populated city of Nigeria. It ranks the second in Africa and the seventh place in the world as the fast-growing city. According to the Lagos State Government report, the population in Lagos used to be 17.5 million. These figures were disputed by the Government of Nigeria on the basis of data from the National Population Commission in Nigeria. The current demographic estimate shows at least 21 million people in Lagos, making it the largest metropolis among other cities in Africa.
Lagos is a metropolitan area which originated on islands separated by creeks. It is surrounded by Lagos Lagoon on the southwest and the Atlantic Ocean with long sandy plumes, such as Bar Beach, on the east and west to the mouth.
From the beginning, Lagos has been expanded on the west of the mainland of the Lagoon including Ikeja (the capital of Lagos). Today Lagos expands more than forty kilometres (25 miles) to the north-west of Lagos Island
According to the local government data, some suburbs which include Ikorodu, Epe,Badagry and other newly established provincial councils bring the total number of local governments in Lagos to 57.
