It is no longer news that, the current administration is desirous to making sure that TAX becomes the next OIL, hence it (the government) is doing everything legally possible to reverse the country's low Tax to GDP ratio of 6% (one of the lowest globally). This is being pursued through the capturing of more taxpayers into the tax net, and ensuring that non-compliant tax payers are encouraged to comply (through VAIDS) before the long arm of the law catches up with them.
In order to be properly positioned (whether as a taxpayer of tax consultant) for the government's new tax drive, knowledge of the Nigerian Tax system is a sine qua non.
Paragraph 2.2.3 of the National Tax Policy tagged, "Focus on Indirect Taxation," states that,
"The tax system should focus more on indirect taxes which are easier to collect and administer and more difficult to evade."
How grounded are you in the operation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) system - a type of Indirect Tax? What about your subordinates, are they on top of the topic as well?
Do you have a good grasp of the laws, principles and practice of the Withholding Tax (WHT) system in Nigeria? What about your subordinates, are you comfortable with their level of mastery of the subject matter?
What about other areas of Tax Management cum Compliance (Processes & Procedures) - Registration & Filling of Returns in respect of Taxpayers Identification Number (TIN); Employees Compensation Scheme (ECS); Industrial Training Fund (ITF); National Housing Fund (NHF); Certificate of Acceptance of Fixed Assets (CAFA); PAYE & CIT computations, etc. Would there be need to refresh your memory in these areas?
