About Cellulose-Dietary Fiber
Soluble and Insoluble Dietary Fiber
In the past, people usually regarded dietary fiber as insoluble. For instance, corn fiber can improve peristalsis of digestive tract, prevent constipation and is a key factor to maintaining gastrointestinal function and decreasing susceptibility to cancer. It also plays a minor role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
Research reports show that another fiber in diet, insoluble fiber, can decrease blood lipid levels. A colloid substance that is formed after fiber enters the intestine through water absorption accomplishes this. Like a sponge, this colloid substance wraps around cholesterol and steroids, which can then be excreted from the body. Bile is synthesized in the liver from cholesterol. When the cholesterol is depleted, the liver must use blood cholesterol to synthesize bile acid, therefore reducing the blood cholesterol level. A 1-% reduction of blood cholesterol will diminish 2% of cardiovascular disease potential.
It is in this way that insoluble fiber will play a leading role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
Foods Containing Insoluble Fiber
Insoluble fiber exists in our daily diet in the form of foods such as grapes and apples, which contain high pectin, and soybean products and oats, which contain high dextran content. In these insoluble fiber-rich foods, b-dextran in oats has been widely studied to show that it is related to the reduction of blood cholesterol. Recently, 60 clinical reports verify that the oat is really capable of reducing blood cholesterol. The FDA certified oats as a health food for heart care in 1997.
Advantages of Soluble Fiber
Aiding excretion: Dietary fibers absorb water causing them to expand, which induces excretion and reduces the amount of time harmful materials remain in the intestines. According to Japanese research, approximately one-third of Alzheimer patients experienced chronic constipation in their youth.
Reducing cholesterol: Increased cholesterol is a chief cause of arteriosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Because fiber hinders accumulation of cholesterol, increasing fiber in the diet by only ten grams per day significantly reduces cholesterol and decreases deaths due to myocardial infarction.
Maintaining standard body weight and preventing obesity:
Overweight is a primary cause of heart disease and high blood pressure. According to recently published information, if people maintain standard body weight, coronary heart disease will decrease by twenty-five percent. Dietary fiber’s high absorbability has the effect of decreasing caloric energy of food and increasing a full stomach feeling, thereby deterring overeating and obesity.
Providing conditions favorable to colon cancer prevention:
Incidence of colon cancer greatly relates to diets of high fat, low fiber food. Increased dietary fiber helps prevent cancer by absorbing bile acid and its metabolite, aiding them to pass out of the body quickly before intestinal bacteria act on the bile acid to make it carcinogen producing. In addition, the xylem of fiber strengthens immunity and restrains development of cancer cells.
